Austin’s Modern Home Tour
This past Saturday the Good Life Team and Launch 787 opened up 16 of Austin’s most architecturally interesting new age abodes for the 3rd Modern Home Tour. http://modernhometouraustin.com/
Estimates from Matt Swinney of Launch 787 had presale tickets at roughly 1,750, which far exceeded their hefty goal of 1,000. Including day of tickets, and comps for sponsors it would be easy to say that over 2,000 individuals graced the insides of these remarkable locations.
Stationed at 2106 Eastside, I was amazed not only at the dynamic architecture, but also the intense thought and planning that made everything from the balcony to windows views, and room locations utilize the environment.

Aside from it being a little chilly outside, it was a fantastic day for home touring! I would easily estimate that over 1,000 people stopped by to observe the house listed by Marina Lawson of Lord & Lawson for $539,000. (Which really is a steal when you consider the Travis Heights lot itself would easily go for over 300K.)
From my post I was intrigued to find such a wide variety of tour participants. Ranging from 20 to 80 year old couples, people using iphone cameras vs. those with professional grade camera equipment, and group families to individuals. Every age, race, gender, sexuality, (and maybe even religion as I hear a Quaker was spotted at 2305 Shoal Creek) seemed to be interested in modern architecture.
But perhaps the best part was the after party and architecture panel at Trulucks! Delicious appetizers and fun was had by all. In regards to the panel I believe the question “What is Modern Architecture?” was best explained as “it gets rid of all the bullshit”. That really clicked with me, because I realized the main difference between traditional and modern homes is the removal of ornamentation as to produce the most effective use of space. Genius!
OrmayBE my cheeks still hurt from smiling so much and I can’t wait until the next tour! Major Props to all the organizers, promoters, and sponsors!
